It may take time, but worth it!
Leather has been an all-time favorite material used for many kinds of applications. It looks stylish, classic, and durable as well. However, leather has a tendency to acquire oxidation after a long period of usage, which may result in some defects such as color darkening due to sun exposure. Hence, caring about this exotic material is an important thing if you want to luxuriate the pleasure of having it with no loss of sheen for a long time. Here’s how you should store your leather goods, in contrast for accessories, when not in use for a long period of time.
- Fill your leather bag
To keep your leather bag in its shape and prevent the risk of bending, you can stuff your bag with plastic or bubble wrap (perfect filling!) inside. Using newspaper, paper, or cloth will never be a good idea, as they can stain the leather. - Wrap it out
Before storing your leather goods, wrap them with acid-free paper. Paper? You said it can stain the leather! No, if you’re using acid-free paper on the external of your leather goods. The benefit of using this kind of paper is that it gives protection against moisture, dust, dirt, and bugs as well as causes no discoloration and structural change. - Store in a breathable container
Never ever keep your leather goods in a sealed plastic bag or container. Leather is coming from a living hide, like our skin! Therefore, it is important to let it breathe. One simple solution is to store your leather accessories in their dustbag. The dustbag also protects your leathers from daylight and artificial light which can cause color fading. - Control the humidity
Controlling the humidity in your storage will be highly beneficial for your leather goods. High humidity can wreak havoc on leather and saturating it to rot. Otherwise, too dry environment will cause the leather to crack. The good news is, leather has naturally designed to absorb moisture from its surroundings, hence moderate humidity level exposure shouldn’t cause any problems.
