Learning fabrics can save you time and stretch your wardrobe dollars.

We often experience problems with our fabrics due to some reasons or maybe we even don’t know what the cause is. Some fabric problems listed here may not have a remedy, but at least you recognize them before they happen – we hope so.

  • Color loss
We are frequently getting our fabrics' color lost. When it is caused by rubbing, bleaching, staining, or fading, generally there is no remedy. We still have the choice of using a dry cleaner to wash our fabrics through dye pads to add color back to the affected areas. However, there are two problems: limited color choices and the added dyes wash out each time they are cleaned.
  • Dye bleed
Dye bleed usually happens on dryclean-only garments. Water – in any form, can cause the dye to bleed during cleaning or washing. Leather goods mostly will bleed when they’re wet and cause a permanent stain on the material the dye has bled to. Be careful with leather goods while in the rain or snow.
  • Fabric pilling
Pills are susceptible to raw-silk jackets, sweaters, and knitted clothing. It appears as groups of short or broken fibers become tangled together on the surface. These pills can be shaved, but also thin the fabric.
  • Insect damage
When you find your wool clothing with small holes that you believe are not tears, they may be a result of insect damage. Insects such as moths, crickets, silverfish, and etc can damage uncleaned clothing. So, we need to keep the clothes clean and away from high humidity. Be proactive if you see unfamiliar holes.
  • Weakened fiber
Fiber can be weakened by spills, sunlight exposure, household chemicals, and food stains at an extreme rate. Stains that are left untreated for weeks or months can severely weaken the fabric or perhaps make holes. Wash or dry-clean (if you need to) as soon as your fabrics get stains.
