- PigskinWe can identify that a leather is pigskin if it has a distinctive grain pattern with the hairs penetrating through the grain layer leaving holes in it, or small “dimples”. The grain is often seen on gloves, handbags, shoes, wallets, etc. For it has hair, so that the pig needs to be scalded to loosen the hair and subsequently brushed off. Then, it is usually vegetable-tanned, dried, and heavily milled to show the grain pattern.
- Aniline cowhideCowhide is popular amongst the leather world because it is cheaper than other types of leather. However, the grain character of cowhide is much harder, and difficult to get the leather as soft as sheepskin. Due to its lower quality, the leather will be pigmented constantly, coated, and corrected. Commonly, cowhide is used for shoes, briefcases, bags, wallets, and mostly for clothing.
- Pigmented, coated, and corrected leatherThe leather is produced just the same way as aniline leather, but then it is sprayed with resin-based pigment to mask the faults. The appearance of the finished product will be more plastic than the aniline leather and the grain character will be covered up with the pigment. Meantime, corrected leathers are done by buffing away the grain surface and then covering the surface with heavy pigmented resin.
- Double-face or woolskinAfter slaughtering sheep, the best woolskin will be selected and go to the next process. Woolskin is commonly chrome or vegetable-tanned. Moreover, special dyes will be used to dye the wool fibers and give the best color. Subsequently, the skin will be dried, the suede wheeled or sprayed, the wool cropped, and combed to the desired effect.
- Goat grainGoat grain is one of the most resilient leathers found and is naturally water resistant. It is tougher and more tightly fibred than sheep and has a very hard-wearing grain. Goat grain has a texture like pebbles and ridges, yet it is very comfortable to wear. The quality of the raw material is very mixed and invariably different sizes. Goat grain can be applied to shoes, bags, wallets, etc.
